Appendix - About the Cities

Shanghai: A renown leading hub for innovation, aiming to expand its GDP by around 6.5% in 2018 with priorities to deepen market reforms and enhance innovation. As the commercial and financial center of China, Shanghai’s GDP was 3013.318 billion RMB (444 billion USD) in 2017. In the last two decades Shanghai has been one of the fastest developing cities in the world. Shanghai Free-Trade Zone is a free-trade zone in Shanghai, China. It is the first free-trade zone in mainland China. The zone covers an area of 120.72 square kilometers and integrates four existing bonded zones in the district of Pudong. It is especially suitable for companies with international business. SSIC is proud to be partner with China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone Offshore Entrepreneurial Base for Overseas Professionals, which provides an integrated platform for overseas talents and business incubations. The offshore base corporates with 16 "overseas partners" and 12 science and technology societies, covering 10 countries and radiating to regions with relatively concentrated innovative resources in Europe, North America and the Asia-pacific. The aim is to provide strong support for overseas project and guided professional forces and government to participate in the process.

Hangzhou: Hangzhou is the capital and most populous city of Zhejiang Province in East China. In 2017, Hangzhou is marked by steady economic growth. It realizes GDP totaling 1.2556 trillion RMB (180 billion USD), at a growth rate of 8.0%, 1.1% and 0.2% respectively higher than the national and provincial average. It is at the forefront of China’s push to develop its tech industry, and serves as a blueprint for other cities across the country. Hangzhou’s growth is symbolic as China’s continuing transition from manufacturing to a value-added, serviced-based and technologically-advanced economy. Covering a total land area of 16,596 sq km, Hangzhou is comprised of ten urban districts and two rural counties (Tong Lu and Chun’an) and one county-level sub-city (Jian De). The development of the city is driven by three main industries—high-technology, intelligent manufacturing, and finance.

Ningbo: A sub-provincial city with more 7000 years history in northeast Zhejiang province in China, an important port city situated in the Yangtze River Delta (220 kilometers south of Shanghai), with several important economic and technological development zones. Ningbo is a major manufacturing powerhouse in China and was the first city in China to implement Made in China 2025. In 2017, Ningbo’s GDP grows by 15.33%, reached 985 billion RMB (145 billion USD), becoming the highest growth rate city among first or second-tier cities. Industry is the main economic driver of the city’s economy, contributing 47% to the city’s GDP in 2017. Pillar industries in Ningbo are petrochemicals, chemicals, electrical machinery, telecom equipment manufacturing, IT and port-related industry. Ningbo has been largely promoting high-tech exchanges and hunting for more international talents in the recent years.
