Swiss-Sino Innovation Center organized training program on green and sustainable pharmaceutical topic in December 2019

From December 2 to 9, 2019, SSIC organized training courses with focus on green and sustainable pharmaceutical topics and company visits for a delegation from the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). The delegation is composed of 22 members led by Mr. Hu Xianghong, Deputy Director of China Electronic Product Reliability and Environmental Testing Research Institute.

 

 

On December 2, 2019, Dr. Feng Jianhua, Director of SSIC, welcomed the delegation at the SSIC office in Dübendorf. Two experts from Chemical & Analytical Development (CHAD) Novartis, Dr. Fabrice Gallou and Dr. Ulrich Onken, introduced the strategy of environmental protection and sustainability in CHAD, green chemistry and its tools with solid case studies and practices.

 

 

The second lecture was given by Dr. Serge Rezzi, Director of the Swiss Vitamin Institute, on December 4. Dr. Rezzi presented his research work on precision healthcare and nutrition with the focus on metabolomics and gut microbiome studies, which leads to preventative strategies for individual health management.

 

 

On December 6, SSIC organized a company visit at Roche headquarters in Basel. The delegation was received by Dr. Lionel Loew, Head of Historical Archive Roche, and Dr. Martin Studer, Head of Environmental Protection Basel Site at Roche. Dr. Loew gave an overview of the company history of over 120 years. Dr. Studer introduced the waste and waste water management at Roche Basel. After the presentations, the delegation visited the environmental labs and the liquid waste management workshop.

 

 

On the last day of the program, December 9, SSIC arranged one lecture in the morning by Dr. Yao Xiaochun, Director of Process Management from Valorec Services AG, and one company presentation by Mr. Gilbert Pfund, Head of Business Development & Licensing at Luye Pharma Europe. Dr. Yao has more than 30 years of experience in the Swiss pharma industry. His lecture focuses on the Swiss regulations of wastes generated from pharmaceutical production with case studies. Mr. Pfund introduced the development and the vision of Luye Phama in Europe.

 

 

During the training program, the members of MIIT delegation obtained an overview of Swiss pharma industry, with in-depth knowledge on the green chemistry practice and the environmental protection measurements. They asked numerous questions during the lectures and the visits, and had vivid interactions with the Swiss experts. They will bring back the knowledge from this training program to further optimize the environmental protection practices in China.
